Morning tidbit from Canvas Minecraft MOOC, there is a free demo mode login available for MC, worth a try if you just want to see what MC is about:
You can download a demo from https://minecraft.net/demo. All you have to do is register for a Mojang account which is free.
The demo is a time limited demo so it resets the world after 100 minutes of play but the demo does not expire itself. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Demo_mode
