yay look what I found while exploring on my own. A Desert Temple. I can't wait to enter, but I prefer to give us all a chance to explore it for the first time together. So, can we use the doodle again to see when the majority can play please? I created a warp to it but I would really appreciate it if we do this together :) thanks

Sorry for the delay but here's the video from where I met +Dakota Redtone on the #evomc17 server a few days back and he showed me how to neutralize the skele spawner Barbara Stevens and I had discovered under David Dodgson's Winterhouse. Here you can see me raid the skele's chests for goodies (during which Dakota manages to shoot me in a friendly fire incident), and afterwards we go on walkabout to another interesting build on the tiaga not too far from the spawn point. Does anyone know whose house that is at the end of the video?

hi everyone.

hi everyone. Unfortunately I seem to have missed everything I was actually looking forward to. For some reason I stopped receiving notifications from the group. The became suspicious about the radio silence but it was too late already when I came to check.

In any case I just wanted to say congrats to all those who earned their badges and a big thank you to all the organizers and my co-learners, I really enjoyed learning and playing with all of you. Thank you so much Jo Kay for all the sharing I really enjoyed our conversations and thank you soooo much Mattie (Jane Chien please pass on my thanks :)) for inviting and grouping with me for fun adventures and for teaching me about potions :)

OliveTree Lighthouse and I are looking forward to continue the adventures :)

Hi everyone, the EVO Minecraft MOOC survivor's badge has been created and is ready to be awarded to Beth S O'Connell, Kim Harrison, Jane Chien, David Dodgson, and David Plumel.

Why only these few and not the many more who have contributed remarkably to #evomc17? Because these are the people who entered their names and links to their accomplishments at http://tinyurl.com/evomc17-badgetrack (request to write there if needed).

If you want your badge just document whatever you have accomplished there. This is important because this link contains the evidence given for awarding the badge, which anyone will be able to see if they want to know what you did to earn the badge.

There is no real cut-off for this. You can have this month and maybe even next to link us to your artifacts online and help us create a showcase of what you have accomplished in #EVOMC17.

ok i will share all i made exept mob farm because we see nothing lol or slime farm for same reason.

Hi all, I'm sure others have much more interesting adventures on the #EVOMC17 Minecraft MOOC server, but here is something I recorded when I was testing my wife Barbara Stevens's setup for streaming. It made a kind of narrative that I'm happy to share here. Hope to see you in world soon.

Hello all

Hello all,

As the sun sets on this year's EVO, I have agreed to write an article about what was learned from the session. I would like the write up to be more than just my voice so I would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions with a few comments:

1. What did you learn about during this session?
2. How did you learn? (Trial and error, seeking help/advice, trying to find your own way, watching videos, reading guides online, anything else?)
3. How do you envisage Minecraft potentially being used as a learning tool in your context?

Any other comments welcome!

Please can you fill out the participant survey (some time this month please).

Please can you fill out the participant survey (some time this month please). It only takes a few minutes and we moderators would appreciate your feedback. The survey is from the EVO coordination team and also helps them gather data to put in a report to TESOL (Seattle). Thank you for your participation and for your valuable feedback.

Hi all, I've uploaded the video I made of our visit with the Massively Minecraft kids from Feb 11, 2017, https://youtu.be/oEy5M8Unx30.

I've updated our events page with show notes on the event
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/112913140/Live_events2017

I believe Rose Bard made a recording as well and if she shares her version I'll link to her perspective on the events page.

Thanks very much to Jo Kay for organizing this for us.

Attending Glodore aka Steve Jenkinson call to help build a town around the rails he is building near Linda's winter keep, I built a villager Reabilitation Center. After being cured, they are learning to be villagers again. The first one attending the program is a cleric. Trading is super welcome! /warp rehabcenter
After visiting Jo Kay server, I thought of building streets and mapping out spaces for ppl to build and contribute. I hope Steve Jenkinson and Linda Gielen approve the ideas and builds so far. :)

Good discussion.

Hi everyone, I have just shared the link to the almost two-hour closing event for EVO2017, which just ended a few minutes ago. I got a recording and am sharing it here, https://youtu.be/A-ARWEqUK9g. Linda Gielen and Rose Bard were there. I'll try to extract the short video segment of just us talking about #EVOMC17

This doesn't mean that EVOMC17 is over. I still have to make the badge for the course, and award them to anyone who fills in the form with evidence of accomplishements here. Glodrail is still building his railroad and needs our help. Rose has numerous projects going on and we haven't properly visited Enfield Village. So EVOMC17 still has 10 months to run before it segues into EVOMC18 :-)

I've updated our EVENTS page with the link from this evening and I made a recording of our meeting with Jo Kay and Massively Minecraft kids and I'll have that up at this link shortly (wait another day for it :-)

I meant to post this from a few days ago, when after days of searching and looking hither and yon I finally caught up with Jeff Kuhn somewhere on the slopes of Mt. The Skeleton xp farm has to wait!

The Skeleton xp farm has to wait! After meeting Maha Abdelmoneim and Dakotah Redstone in Enfield and acknowledging (Thanks, Phil) that Villagers were having trouble with a 1X4 house ahahah hubby and I built them a proper home.

I had an idea of how to build it because I remembered Linda Gielen 's first grinder and tried to build it like hers.

I had an idea of how to build it because I remembered Linda Gielen 's first grinder and tried to build it like hers. But as I had some doubts, I watched couple of videos. The first gave an idea of how things were done in the inside of the grinder, and in the second one I found the moving mobs around a bit complicated. It will be a lesson for another time! Today, I'll build the skellie farm.
What is interesting though is that a year ago, I wouldn't explore caves or even get near a spawner. As we become more experienced with the game, we develop new skills and more confidence. It's also true that the fact that KeepInventory on makes things a bit easier and as mentioned in one of the discussions recently, we become fearless as there is nothing really to lose. I wonder though if now that EVO is coming to an end, we could turn off KeepInventory. I miss the thrill we get if we lose everything and have to start over. Plus, as it was mentioned by others in our community, it forces us to be more careful and develop strategies to stay alive. :) I'm also planning to build a station with carts that takes people from the village tthrough the mineshaft to the grinders.

My husband loves the sound of lava! I usually avoid them lol
He does because he knows that usually near lava, there is diamond!
He found a lava pit the day before, just when we were about to turn off computers. I asked him to wait for me to explore it with him. Almost 24 hours later, we did! After 4 hours (more or less) of finding a mineshaft, a ravene and mob spawners (spider, zombie, skeleton) and successfully deactivating them.... we are finally heading to bed! I had never seen a Skeleton spawner. This is the area below the village. Tomorrow I want to learn how to build an xpfarm using the skelie and zombie spawner! It should be fun!

Hi all

Hi all,

It's that time of year when we are bringing our session to a close and some of us are focusing on BADGES. Evidence of your participation in this session is documented here, http://tinyurl.com/evomc17-badgetrack. If you ask to join that Google Sheet you will be accepted and you can write in links to your accomplishments, for which you can earn the badge. I haven't created this year's badge yet, but I'll monitor that space. You don't have to do all of the tasks there. That sheet though is evidence of what you DID linked from your badge, so fill in as much as possible. Badges will be awarded some time in February. Thanks for all your hard work and serious FUN.

Hi All

Hi All,

As discussed, the Massively kids would be glad to have visitors. Looking at time zones we thought either of the following times might work ...

Session 1: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20170211T1700

Session 2: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20170211T2000

Let us know which would work best for everybody and we can lock it in.

For those who'd like to come along to visit, you'll need to let me know in the comments so I can whitelist you on the day - please include your Minecraft name so I get it right! (I think I know everyone's 8bit identity, but best to be sure! :P)

The server address is play.jokaydia.com or 63.141.254.138 and we're running Minecraft v 1.11.2

Hello everyone! Are we in Week 5 now?

A hectic week at work and on-going connection issues have kept me off the server recently but I did find time to reflect on last week's streamed session. I was (and still am) fascinated by the different ways we all approach the same game!

I'm glad you found the link useful Jane Chien.

I'm glad you found the link useful Jane Chien. I didn't want to hijack Mattie's post, so I'm posting a new thread. There is a list of names I could give you that use Minecraft in their classroom in a range of school subjects, but I'm not aware of teachers who are actually using it to teach specifically English as a foreign language (apart from Beth Evans who has an amazing project with refugees). That's why we are here, right? We are here to support each other with our experiences. Maybe teachers first of all, once experience Minecraft, are becoming more aware of what playing the game is like and can then see the potential of it. However, as we tend to do what we want in MC rather than what others want, unless negotiated, I often think how am I go to make every student do this in MC. But this is true for any lesson we prepare. But in school, we assume they know better and they will follow our lessons just as we desire. Something really important if you are going to use a game as a learning environment or tool is for the teacher to play and understand what game is all about. When I started my journey of learning about gaming and investigating gbl , I started by reading a lot about it. The first book I read and I highly recommend is from Gee "What video games teach us about literacy". To be honest, I didn't read the whole book, but what I read was enough for me to start wanting to learn more about how a language could be learned through games. I even used Game design as a task with my gamer students. It could have been creating a menu. But no, it was a game and they lived up to the expectation by creating 4 games to test whether a reader understood the story or not. While actually working through those game designing process with my students, I heard about Jeff's work, watched his amazing game 101 workshop online, I contacted him and he was really kind to respond. He told me that the first thing to do was "start playing". I did. Apart from Jeff (writing class - btw, Jeff Kuhn were they American students or foreign students), Irvspanish (teaches Spanish - check him out) and David Dodgson (in Turkey) who have had experience using Minecraft with their students, I don't know others for English at the moment. But 2016 was a busy year for me and I was busy researching my own students and looking for my own experiences. In English language teaching in countries that teaches English as foreign language, apparently we are tied to the traditional tools (flashcards, songs, stories, books, etc.) and somehow new tools like Minecraft are not seen as potential tool yet for teaching. Teachers in other areas have seen the potential and are already using it but I think this is a movement more in countries like England, US, Australia ( but I guess they do also find resistance and difficulties here and there too). There are teachers who see the potential, but we either bumping into the administrators not buying into it and because they prefer the safe road, or we lack the resources to design, implement and research it. :( The school I work for has a subject for informatics that could fit Minecraft in, but not to actually teach English... they are more interested in using it for Math and related areas. They are actually waiting for Microsoft to release the edu version in Brazil. and I'll surely support their effort. A dear friend who loves minecraft said something that got me thinking... "By the time teachers add to their toolbox MC, it will have lost its sparkle with the kids because the kids will have found something else." In our school, among teens I found very few students who liked Minecraft, but among students between 8-11 about 70% of them. Now, when I used it with my 6th graders I found a number of challenges. For one lack of resources, then, I used MC content to link it to the textbook content. It worked to some extend. It could have been more productive if we had the actual game at least to balance the time between planning the buildings, learning the game vocabulary, using it while in the game, show and tell presentations, etc. Minecraft is all in one: a notebook (you can actually write in books in MC, signs, etc.), an art canvas to use your creativity by building, presentation tool when combined with video recording and screencapture, discussion board when in chat or in a forum to discuss the game. I think MC is also overwhelming with so much you can do with it when comes to use it as tool for language teaching and learning. As with any tool, we choose one aspect and focus on it. As we become more proficient with that tool, we expand our knowledge of how to use it in instruction/learning. Sorry for the long post, but it amazes me how much has been said about MC in my country for instance and so far, I don't see we are moving forward in terms of using new tools in the classroom and reflecting how digital media and access to Youtube and apps have reshaped the way people actually are experiencing learning.

I have learned that not everyone has seen the event notice for Friday February 3, when Vance Stevens and Jeff Kuhn, present at 1700 UTC at the Connecting Online conference starting today on EVO Minecraft MOOC: Third time around overview

I have just set up a stream for it at https://youtu.be/ijRcvzLuP4I

If that works (never any guarantees :-) then you can watch there and text chat with us on http://chatwing.com/vancestev

Here's what it's about: #EVOMC17 is now in its third iteration of seeking to introduce teachers to Big G Gamification by experiencing the concept through interaction with teaching peers in the “little g” game of #Minecraft. The presentation explains how the community has sustained itself for three years as a space where experienced players and noobs alike can contribute to each other’s appreciation of Minecraft as a “toy” for enabling learning over a wide range of concepts. This presentation will focus on the evolution of the #EVOsessions Minecraft MOOC community from 2015 through the present, how it has indeed become a community, who it has attracted from other networks, and the interesting move from starting in creative and then morphing to survival (2015 and 2016, to the running of two parallel worlds as we do today (2017).

My husband, Emanuel and I love MC!

My husband, Emanuel and I love MC! We have different preferences when comes to it though. Emanuel loves playing Minigames in different MC servers. His fav are Hypixel and The Hive! My husband loves building and is not very patient to gather resources, so in our family realm which is set to survival, he has super powers and can choose to play in creative to build. He loves renovating the villages he finds around the map. I love survival!
Last year when we started playing as a family, we enjoyed spending time together. Emanuel had already been playing since he was 4, but only in singleplayer and mostly building and exploring the tools and items. My husband was always near by but never really played it. I was just starting my adventure in MC. As we all evolved in the game, so did our preferences. Nowadays, we don't play together as much as we used to and It took me a few days to convince my husband to come to EVO server to help me renovate the village. Everytime I invited him, he'd say: "It's in survival" This is us today at the nether gathering some resources.

Enfield Village coming along...

Enfield Village coming along...
Today I added the market place.

As my epic journey across the expanse of the Mincraft wilderness continues, it has me thinking about teaching.

As my epic journey across the expanse of the Mincraft wilderness continues, it has me thinking about teaching. Recently, I passed through an icy winter biome and having ran low on supplies, I got to thinking about the book The Worst Journey in the World. It's a fantastic read on an ill-fated expedition to the South Pole and would be an interesting complimentary read to my Minecraft adventure. Now I'm kicking around a course idea where players have to survive an arctic biome and read survival literature like Worst Journey or perhaps reading about Shackleton's expedition to Antarctica.

Anyway, it has me thinking about other traditional literacies that I could pair up with Minecraft. A few years back I taught a writing class that paired Minecraft and the book World War Z. Our goal was to better understand the experiences of the characters in the book by having similar experiences in-game. The reading and the gameplay fueled our writing. It was fun.

Any thoughts? Based on your in-game experiences what book, movie, or TV show would be a good pairing for the classroom?

After discovery a zombie spawner below my house a few weeks back, I decided to create an XP farm as well as a Zombie Villager Recovery Center. Since most of the villages we knew of were quite a distance from spawn city, I thought it would be nice to have a few NPCs at spawn that we could trade with, and what better way to do so than by curing zombie villagers. It took quite a time to get all the resources I needed (brewing station, fermented spider eye, golden apples and weakness potions) and even more time to cull the zombie villagers from the regular zombies. Once I had all the resources and was able to get a good number of cured villagers, I soon realized that their quarters were not the best (1X3 rooms!) and that they needed a new home.

Well, lucky for me, I was able to find a collaborator who was willing to build a village for our new residents. Dakotah Redstone said he had a perfect place where my villagers could reside in comfort, so last night we took on the task of moving the villagers from their dark and dungy quarters to their new bright and open community. We built a railway from the “dungeon” to the new village, and after much frustration, were finally able to get all of them transported out.

It only took a matter of minutes for the villagers to take to their new home (especially when it turned to night) and to start forming “lasting relationships” with one another. Before we knew it, baby villagers began appearing!

We invite everyone to visit the “Glitch Gulch” (called that because of all the glitches we had with our railway system) and welcome our new residents, and perhaps start a new trading relationship!

This is about the best I've been able to do so far.

This is about the best I've been able to do so far. I can't get comments to upload consistently to blogger. It might be a bandwidth ...
