Sun Feb 1 1400 GMT #Learnng2gether with EVO Minecraft MOOC: Modifying the game for language learning with Dave Dodgson, Jeff Kuhn, and EVOMC15 co-moderators, https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/ckmi5bcs2572sa408vef64oa500

Dave Dodgson  will outline what his students at his former school were doing with Minecraft and what he's been doing at his current school. He has a few videos his former students made on Youtube which he will also share. And now that the #EVOMC15 particpants have tested the Minecraft waters Jeff will lead a session on modifications for the game (nothing too technical) so folks can get a glimpse into how Minecraft can really be tweaked for specific learning content.

We'll meet in Hangout on Air, stream on http://webheadsinaction.org/live for an hour, share Minecraft screens, and then move to world post-show. All are welcome. More information at http://tinyurl.com/learning2gether

Morning tidbit from Canvas Minecraft MOOC, there is a free demo mode login available for MC, worth a try if you just want to see what MC is about:

You can download a demo from https://minecraft.net/demo. All you have to do is register for a Mojang account which is free.

The demo is a time limited demo so it resets the world after 100 minutes of play but the demo does not expire itself. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Demo_mode

Hi all, regarding our Sandbox set for 1400 GMT TODAY Sat Jan 23. So far Jeff, Bobbi, and I have committed to be there as early as 1300 GMT today and also at 19:00 GMT. Barbara Bujtas might join us for the later session, but as yet no one else has signed on. We're open for Saturday as well, as requested earlier by one other participant. If you plan to join us let us know what time is good for you. The Doodle poll is still open at http://doodle.com/9zgnd38weaviu6mf. Here's what it looks like at of 0900 GMT today.

Wesley Fryer led me on a brief journey of discovery this morning which I'm sharing with #evomc15 . The immediate link was to his blog post at Moving with the Speed of Creativity where he posted a 7 min video of students and teachers explaining the benefits of #minecraft . However, at that post we learn that he is giving STEM workshops at a school that bought 29 Minecraft licenses. The page for that one is a treasure trove of Minecraft videos and tutorials, enjoy http://stem.wesfryer.com/home/minecraft.

Hi all.

Hi all.  I wasn't able to attend the first meet and greet or first play time, but I am quite interested in this MOOC.  In case you don't know me, I'm Aaron Schwartz, the current chair of TESOL's CALL-IS.  I've also (probably thanks to Jeff Kuhn ) been playing Minecraft for 2 years now...and first in single-player, but after a while I started playing on multiplayer servers.

I got a chance to watch the recording of last week's hangout and was happy to see how so many people around the world are approaching gaming in education was particularly excited to hear some of the stories about children's motivation and agency due to their experiences with the game.

Like Jeff, I teach college students and I do think that most of them perceive Minecraft as something for younger kids.  However, last semester, I taught a CALL course for future language teachers and found that one student was an avid player and we did a mini-lesson involving the game.  It was mostly chaotic but the students saw the potential of the game and many wrote about it in their later assignments.

I'm interested in how the game and the server can be modified for education and community building and I have been playing around with various modpacks for the game.  My favorite is called computercraft (http://computercraft.info), a plugin that actually puts programmable computers into the game.  Players can actually write programs in the game (or download programs that have been shared online) and use moving computers (called Turtles -- anyone remember Logo?) effectively as robots to manipulate the virtual environment of the game.

I've learned a lot about the game in the last two years, including redstone circuitry (basically in-game electricity), hidden levels, and (as mentioned above), working with plugins.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.   #evomc15

Hi everyone.

Hi everyone. As promised here is a range of options to choose from for the days requested for Minecraft practice this week. It tries to cover the range of times where anyone said they would be available. In this poll you can see when others might be able to join you, and of course, it you want to schedule other days/times, feel free to propose one in your own poll.

Today the kids in class 6 had to write some phrases to associate to 6 topics. One of the topics was (surprise) Minecraft. The other categories were clothes, places, buildings, kitchen, etc. You will probably not be surprised that the Minecraft card had more words than any of the other categories, it was great to see them go through their "Inventory". And then writing comparative and superlative sentences with words chosen from the cards.

Hi everyone, week 1 went beyond many of our expectations, and now we are starting week 2 of #evomc15.

Hi everyone, week 1 went beyond many of our expectations, and now we are starting week 2 of #evomc15. In the Dave Cormier scheme of things (on how to cope with MOOCs) we are past the ORIENT stage and into DECLARE for week 2, which is where people start fitting in and expressing that fit through blog posts and  YouTube recordings. For many of us this has been a natural progression, with many blogs having emerged already in Week 1.

One way to DECLARE is to to TAG your posts #evomc15. You can make sure we find your posts by tweeting their existence using that hash tag. Then we will find them on our tagboard (try and get your posts to appear there, at
https://tagboard.com/evomc15/search)

I have updated our word document to include Week 2 here
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yRbAzdndRFncpckurKLf5s2b95Z1-Tksclmw1A8Jq7Y/edit. Anyone registered user of that doc can add content there if they wish.

For now we can consolidate what we started in Week 1. We will set up a series of regular server sandbox meetings; Jeff has tentatively agreed to be available Fridays at about the same time as last week, but we will try to find additional times.  On Jan 25 1400 GMT Marijana and Filip Smolčec will host our Sunday show (with me and others who may be free at that time). We will schedule EVENTS for this community to put our meetups in our calendar.

If you are planning to join the Canvas Minecraft for Educators MOOC it starts Jan 26 and you'll need to enroll. It could give us additional perspective.

We have already shared phenomenal perspectives on our topic amongst ourselves and we look forward to more in the weeks to come. Your moderators will put forward a program for development based on what we've learned so far, or perhaps the "community as curriculum" will move us forward in the direction participants decide collectively.

It's all part of the game. Congratulations for having survived Week 1. Day dawns now on Week 2.

This is the video I mentioned.

This is the video I mentioned. My students (grade 6) could choose any way to dramatise a story from the coursebook. Now I can appreciate even more the effort that went into this short movie. The three boys spent hours on Skype over the weekend doing their homework.... ;-) Not to mention all the essential skills they developed far beyond a relatively straightforward reading comprehension activity. This was the moment I realised that I wanted to tap into #minecraft  as a learning and teaching tool. (Yes, I did get the boys' permission to show you this video - they were very proud and happy when I asked for it.)

Hi, in the sandbox world I made a trap (I learned it on Thursday evening from my 5th  grader 1-2-1 student who'd read about it in the Redstone Handbook, it was a lava trap, I slightly changed it).
Should you get trapped, here is a tutorial on how to get out.
Sometimes the trap doesn't work, I don't know why ... Filip Smolčec  might be able to explain :D

I had an amazing day playing around. My students told me never to play single player but that's what I have done. Although I never managed to survive the first night but following Filip Smolčec 's brilliant tutorial I got to creating a hideout, using an axe and torches in survivor mode. That's way more than I expected ever to be able to do here. Thanks for all the support and the patience. As Vance Stevens said this is an excellent opportunity to find time to do something new and a great way of learning together. It has been a fun first week.

Hey all.

Hey all. So...yesterday I invited three of my students to "Lunch Lab" to teach me how to play Minecraft. All three are English language learners, two of whom are typically very reluctant to speak in English. I have a video (which I'm going to edit and upload later) and some written student work. Thought you might want to check it out!

A few hours ago this was largely empty but after a server party it is looking pretty good.

Hi Everyone
I am Carol Rainbow, online tutor and machinimatographer. I usually work in Second Life but realise the potential for language learning for children through Minecraft - however I have no idea how to use Minecraft - don't even know where I may find my name :-( As I am also very involved in running an EVO session I fear I may not have the time to do this session but it is too good a chance to miss so am going to try. Please forgive me if I miss a lot .

If you are keen on playing survival mode in Minecraft, maybe this short video tutorial on "How to survive the first night in Minecraft" by Filip Smolčec created 2 years ago (then age 9) will help you. I wanted to post it after Jeff Kuhn great introductory video to #minecraft and Vance Stevens asking for help :) P.S. Filip's English has rapidly improved since then. Some have chosen 1600 GMT and we will probably still be there, though Bobbi and Vance can't stay for long in that time frame. But YOU can and should go there. Also 1700 GMT looks good for some people. Please go and see who is there.

Press T to get a text chat. We'll communicate there where we'll set up a voice connection (Skype? Hangout? we'll figure something out).

If YOU want to organize a time better for you DO IT!  The rest of us will try to make your time zone.

Here's how to get on the MC server

1. Run Minecraft and select "Multiplayer"
2. Click "Add Server"
3. In "Server Address" type in 132.235.81.138 and then select "Done".
4. From here click on the server that pops up and then click the button "Join Server".

Hi there Everyone

Hi there Everyone,
I teach EFL in Hungary. For some years my students have been very passionate about Minecraft, so I thought it would be another way to engage them. I hadn't played until Marijana and Filip's webinar a while ago. Then I downloaded MC PE and wow! Since then some of my students have been teaching me how to play and there are some who are my MC study mates.
I'm really excited about the course, thanks for making it happen :)

Would anyone like to meet at the Minecraft server this Friday for fun and practice?

Would anyone like to meet at the Minecraft server this Friday for fun and practice? We'll organize some kind of voice hookup. If so, respond to this poll, set at times convenient to both Jeff and me. If you want to meet at other times, you can create a poll and invite us.

Greetings fellow teachers and gamers! My name is Kelly Marie Johnston. I teach content-based ESL to fourth and fifth graders at an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. Many of my students are obsessed with Minecraft and have, I've noticed, picked up a lot of vocabulary through gaming. I hope to meet them on that platform and facilitate language learning. This is my first time joining an EVO course and I'm looking forward to learning from you all.

Hi

Hi,
This is my introduction.
I teach full time in the UK. I teach English language and academic skills to international students. I like using technology in teaching and learning, but this don't mean I'm obsessive. I am also trying to complete  and EdD which is researching the use of Second Life with international students.
Last year I did the MachinEVO course (and I'm doing it this year) and really enjoyed it; I then used those skills to record my data (SL sessions).
I hope to gain some good ideas for teaching in the Minecraft course.
Cheers
Anne

Hi all.

Hi all. The answer is YES INDEED! Please request access to the Google Doc so you can edit it, http://screencast.com/t/7CT6w5lKm5x2. You are welcome to do so (and we were wondering where you were :-)

I have purposely set this document so that we can write here using our Google IDs and passwords (the ones we use to join this community). This will prevent vandalism and allow us to revert in case of need. If people were to write here without credentials we would not be able to revert to points where there were anonymous edits, a little inconvenient if not dangerous.

I hope this is the correct way forward, and please request access to this document so you can provide your MC names and we can whitelist you on our server. Thanks!

My apologies, I created an EVENT for Wed Jan 14 1400 GMT before I set up the Hangout on Air for it, and the HoA also created an event here - these are one and the same. There is more information about where this event can be joined here:
 - http://webheadsinaction.org/live

At these spaces you will be provided a DIRECT LINK to the HoA which will enable you to join it (after our lead host Jeff is in the HoA, to prevent it filling and the host not being able to get in).

The HoA can accommodate 10 people but others can listen to the stream and interact with us live at http://chatwing.com/vancestev. The stream and chat are both embedded at http://webheadsinaction.org/live

This will be the pattern for our HoAs, and we hope you can join us.

Stay tuned for events to be posted Jan 14, Jan 25, and Feb 08. For now, let the fun begin :-)

Player builds a working Word Processor inside of Minecraft.

Player builds a working Word Processor inside of Minecraft. This is what people do in their free time when not at school 'learning'.

Have you encountered any Minecraft builds that have you amazed?

What I find fascinating is the time required to do this (conception, pre-planning, building, testing) is leisure. Stebbins (1992) described the phenomenon of serious leisure and how people engage in what could be considered work in their free time. However over the last 50 years leisure has in terms of media meant consumptive entertainment. To relax we consume music, movies, books etc. With the rise of Web 2.0 and collaborative entertainment people are able to engage in mentally challenging entertainment and share it with a global community.

As a teacher I struggle with assigning a drill-and-kill worksheet knowing that some of my students can do this level of work in Minecraft for fun. Determining my role as an educator in a world where information and learning are both ubiquitous and free has been exciting and frustrating.

Hi all I'm Jeff, one of the moderators for the EVO Minecraft MOOC.

Hi all I'm Jeff, one of the moderators for the EVO Minecraft MOOC. Together with Filip, I can most likely answer any of your Minecraft questions. I've been playing Minecraft since the alpha version way back in 2010 and have been using it in the classroom since 2012. My goal for the MOOC is to pick up (and share) some new ideas and innovations in using games in the classroom.

Three things
1. I'm a teacher trainer in the field of CALL
2. I'm currently pursuing my PhD in Instructional Technology with a focus on games.
3. I taught EFL in Japan and Mongolia

Outside of work
1. I'm an avid camper and kayaker
2. I enjoy building, tinkering and DIY activities.

And
1. I'm a gamer and enjoy talking, playing, and sharing new games.

Let's play!
