Anyone else having trouble with the server?

Anyone else having trouble with the server? I'm unable to connect but probably because I am on the wrong version of the game. Is the server running on 1.9.2? Sorry but I forgot :)

Rose Bard and I will show it off at the BrazTESOL conference this week!

Hi all.

Hi all. I made a YouTube video from our event on Sunday Apr 17 where Mircea Patrascu and Rose Bard and I presented on #evomc16  and their work on their own servers to an audience of IATEFL Young Learners SIG.

This coming Sunday a bunch of us are presenting at #SLMOOC16, on which more later, but meanwhile we found that Adobe Connect works great for screen sharing #Minecraft  at a distance, and you can view the video to see how our SL MOOC presentation might go. We just have to get on the server and throw a SERVER PARTY and conduct a tour. I'll set and EVENT and be in touch with the presenters on that shortly.

I've started a blog post of our event here

After being away far too long I'm back on the server...and can't find my house! It's not that I don't remember where my house is - it is that I can't get my bearings to point in the right direction things have changed so much. Our world has boomed! Can't wait to get some exploration time in and see all the stuff the community has put together :)

Hello #EVOMC16 -- This is an announcement that Jeff Kuhn and I will be discussing our EVO experiences and inviting folks to tour the EVO Server during the afternoon tech fair at the Ohio University CALL Conference on Friday (tomorrow).

The presentation, titled "Minecraft for Professional Development and Networking," will be informal (part of the fair), but we will have computers open demonstrating our G+ Community, and our Adobe Connect meeting space. Adobe Connect will be available during the conference at the following link: https://adobeconnect.oit.ohio.edu/evomc16/

If you are available, please join us on the server and/or in the adobe connect session so you can interact with other teachers and CALL professionals and demonstrate our community in action!

The tech fair is scheduled for 1:30pm to 2:30pm EST...that's 5:30-6:30pm UTC.

Here is the link to the conference: https://sites.google.com/site/ohiocallconference2014/ohio-university-call-conference-2015/ohio-university-call-conference-2016-8th-annual-call-conference-2016

A view into hell?

A view into hell?
What is this? Mining at level 11 I rammed into a dark space with a fire and a lot of skeletons and monsters - good that my diamond suit is enchanted meanwhile. Can anyone tell me what I found?
Did I dig too deep like the dwarfs in Moria at "Lord of the rings"?

Managing my last challenges - an enchanting table and a ride to savanna land by cart at #evomc16
Hey, I can enchant tools and weapons, hurraa. As you can see at the pictures, I put an enchantment table in my tree-room in the lighthouse and in my living house in the "city". At the picture in the entrance hall of the lightouse (look through the glass roof) you see my enchanted pickaxe. ;-) I documented mining obsidian by video (in the performance, yet to come).

Approaching from the sea to my beachhouse look at the window in the room under the sea, there's a squid swimming in front of the window pane. Cool. Instead of commuting by boat between there and savanna land I will go by cart, after I found out there is a Metro-connection. Many thanks to Linda for this helpful project!!!
It is really interesting what has become of our world. :D

What is neat about games is something called the possibly space.

What is neat about games is something called the possibly space. This is all the possible things you can do in a game. As long as the possibility space is too large for our brain to fully process the game stays interesting.

For example in tic-tac-toe the possibility space is small. That's why small kids love tic-tac-toe but past a certain age it becomes boring - the child's brain can process all the possible moves making it possible to win or force a draw every time (mistakes aside). Chess, however, can be played for life.

Possibility space can also provide room for a key component of the engagement games provide - internalized goals. Most games have a win state such as Mario saves the Princess. When players get engaged by a game they often forsake this win state goal in favor of a 'win state' of their own - I want to collect every coin in Mario without dying.

Which is a long winded way of saying I have found my new internalized goal - to fill in this map on our Admin Office wall!

Now that the EVO 2016 is officially over, the EVO server's life is just beginning. Visit the "Administrative Offices" on the EVO Survival Server to find this Command Block. What does it do? Push the button to find out?

Week 5 #evomc16

Week 5 #evomc16

The last few weeks have been difficult and challenging, and then I caught the flu.  So I have really procrastinated with the final week of the Minecraft MOOC, which is going into survival mode.

I  called upon all of my metacognitive forces to understand why I was dragging my feet, and voila, it came to me.  I don't want to die and respawn -  I am afraid of survival mode.  Creative is my preferred mode; I enjoy mining, building, flying, exploring and the power to easily fix mistakes.   I do not like the stress of knowing I am not going to survive long term, and it is just a matter of time before a zombie or something gets me.

In other words, I only went into survival mode today because I want my MOOC badge.

I began on a roof where it began raining, so I jumped through a hole and found myself in the mailroom.

I put a sign on a mailbox with my name, broke a couple of glass blocks/windows, then went outside to look around.  As it got dark, I panicked and found I could not get back into the nether portal.   I went into a small house with lights and a library, and that is where I am now

Hopefully, I'll go back later and mine, craft and build, and creative mode will return soon.

MC for Cross-Cultural Exchange?

MC for Cross-Cultural Exchange?

Hi all,

For some time I've been kicking this idea around and recently Rose Bard and I emailed about it. Here goes:

We can set up a server for our students as a way for them engage with other students from around the world. Perhaps we can make it a survival world so they learn to cooperate and interact (their teachers being awesome examples!). Then maybe periodically we have change the game mode to creative for mega builds.

During mega-build weeks the kids can build something from their town/country to show the other kids.

I'm still sketching the idea out but the core concept is a shared space to use a shared game as a platform for international exchange/English language practice.

Thoughts?
