I finally found one of my students, an avid gamer, who had heard of Minecraft...after she made the leap from my English pronunciation to her "maindokurafuto." She followed this acknowledgement immediately with "But I'm not interested in that."

  1. Nice katakanization! Yes, i've noticed in discussions with students, that there are some who are gamers that look down on minecraft. Of course context is everything...Since there is so much appeal for younger learners, older students may look at it as childish. Of course it's all about context.

  2. At this point, after three weeks of experience, I'm fully convinced that MC offers wonderful learning opportunities for younger learners. For adult L2 learners the picture looks different.

  3. Jane Chien One of the things that got me interested in Conversation Analysis was the following curious paradox. On the one hand Japanese are famous throughout the world as a culture of extreme politeness. Yet, one of my first impressions of novice Japanese speakers of English was that they sounded exceptionally rude. More so than any of the students I have had from other countries. There would be some delicate tiny female in class whose behavior and talk would make my blood boil. And I couldn't understand why. I knew she wasn't intentionally "doing being rude."

This "gamer-girl" student is, by the way, one of sweetest, smartest students I have this semester. She would have been mortified to realize the tone that her statement carried to experienced English speakers.

  4. Aaron Schwartz I think you're right on the money about the perception of certain games being for certain age groups...even if any age could (and does) play. If you're little brother is into MC then you might not feel you should be playing it too.

This is about the best I've been able to do so far.

This is about the best I've been able to do so far. I can't get comments to upload consistently to blogger. It might be a bandwidth ...
