If anyone is interested in trying an Italian Minecraft server Tantrum has been really nice so far mc.tantrum.org:23456 . It's a 1.13 server and they are testing 1.14 as well but I haven't tried it there. They also have a Discord server.

Hi all.

Hi all. As the clock counts down on the demise of this marvelous home for our community, many of us are actively considering where we should move to. If you have any thoughts on the best all-in-one home for our continued sharing and discussion, please add them here. If you'd like to talk it over live, you can meet us in Discord at 1300 UTC on March 1. It might be fun and appropriate to pop into Minecraft while we're at it, if that's not too distracting, though the focus would be on the discussion. Meanwhile, there's more information here, http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/2019_Live_Events

Thanks Mircea Patrascu for giving us a group lesson on how to use scriptcraft in Minecraft to build castles, bridges, stairs, and blocks. While Emanual immediately built a house with codes, Mattie Tsai was creating chaos creating outpours of lava using codes. I suffered "intentionally accidental" (as Dak put it) deaths because of Mattie. Vlad, Mircea's son came to the rescue and teleported me back several times when I respawned. We look forward to Mircea's next coding lesson! ^___^

Minecraft Windows 10 Edition (free for anyone who purchased Java Edition before October 2018) can now be used with Code Connection - a free extension that "helps students learn how to code by connecting popular programming platforms to the game".
I created a small tutorial for installing this version and running it together with CC extension, by using as an example my Scratch PixelArt editor: https://kidslovetocode.wordpress.com/2019/02/24/pixelart-in-scratch-transferred-to-minecraft-using-code-connection/

I think I'll try some baby-step exploratory things with MC and my 1st year English students when classes begin in April. Initially, I'll just bring my laptop to class, login in single-player (survival) mode and have small groups of 2-3 try moving around and doing things, while the rest of the class works on some other project or worksheet.

If nothing else, it will be an opportunity for me to communicate with them in simple English. "Press W to move forward."

I won't expect anything more than that unless something develops out of it.

Jane and Vance presented at the EVO closing ceremony which took place on Sunday, starting at 1400 UTC, http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/130258521/2019_Live_Events#SunFeb171400UTCElectronicVillageOnline2019closingceremony

This officially brought EVO 2019 to a close for this year, but it came too early for me because for much of the past week I've been engrossed in travel to Cambodia and attendance at the CamTESOL conference which ended earlier today. But if anyone is willing to meet online I would relish going back on the server and exploring what people have been doing there, especially OliveTree Lighthouse's clickable signs and whatever Dakotah Redstone has been up to at Atracity, and anyone else who's been active and has something to show us, I'd love to meet in MInecraft and see it. Minecraft is so much more FUN when others are online - as we've learned, that's essential, actually.

As regards other housekeeping if anyone wants a certificate of participation in this session, we can arrange that for you, you can alert us here or email vancestev at my gmail address. And if you are going for a badge, I'll be checking the spreadsheet and working out who has been pursuing that track.

At the closing ceremony that's wrapping up now (and to which I am listening) many sessions are talking about continuing into March. We could do that if enough are interested. And those who wish to moderate next year will need to be discussing what changes we want to make based on what we continue to learn year to year.

Thanks very much for a very stimulating EVO Minecraft MOOC for 2019

Want to join my team?

Want to join my team? Dakotah Redstone and OliveTree Lighthouse have been testing out scoreboards in Minecraft. I was so excited to be on Dak's team when I saw my name on the scoreboard. I feel like I'm one of the "OASIS players" from the movie/book "Ready Player One." Let the game begin! When I collect beats and potatoes, the scoreboard shows how many I collected. This is a lot of fun!!

Yaaay :) Clickable Signs.

Yaaay :) Clickable Signs.

What Clickable Signs are: They are signs that look like the normal signs in Minecraft but they are generated by a command. They can be created to run different commands when they are right clicked such as say something, give something, kill something, join or leave a team and many more.

So now we know how to create clickable sings. I found this site http://minecraft.tools/en/sign.php?sign=click%20me&command=%2Fsay%20My%20name%20is&signname=name which is basically a tool that helps generate the commands for different things. I tried the commands on 1.13 and on 1.12 and both worked.

One of the ways we can use use Clickable signs is making a breadcrumb trail as part of a
- Story
- word puzzle
- Treasure or a scavenger hunt

Or of course an activity that has all of the above.

If anyone has an idea that they want to try using signs, please feel free to let everyone know here or start some thoughts in a google doc and then we can help set it up and invite everyone to test it.

On Saturday, the #evomc19 tomb raiding team of Michiyo Toshima, Don Carroll, Dakotah Redstone, Jane Chien, Mattie, and myself, cameraman and archivist, conducted a proper temple excavation. Some back stairways were dug out and sandstone was removed from around the edges to expose the booby trap TNT and chests with the treasures inside, including diamond horse armor awarded by acclamation to Dak for his expertise and sense of adventure. But nothing was disturbed outside the temple save for a few iron doors and some gray brick walls to protect the excavators while they worked through the night.

And that wraps up our Week 4 cluster activities. Week 5 begins today where we FOCUS on what our participants have been doing throughout #evomc19. If you would like to show us your builds, or join us on another adventure somewhere (so many interesting spots on our server) simply reply to this post and we'll get back to you.

Enjoy the last week. Hope to connect in Minecraft!

I'm revisiting a book I have read for my MSc from Debra Levin Gelman, who is mentioned in the article below. Apart from cognitive aspects, there is also the natural social and emotional stages kids go through. The article mentions Minecraft and how it can be empowering for Tweens (from 9-11). It's a good read to help us understand our learners. https://fundayfactory.com/blog/2016-age-appropriate-design-tweens/

Just checking in with this outstanding community of learners to say that I read and explore all that you post; however, working full time (overtime!) as a consultant, I don't keep up with all of your wonderful and creative projects. I am learning a lot and practicing when a get a window of opportunity. I especially enjoy hearing from those of you who apply the tool to instruction. I can see that it would engage students not only in learning English but math and other academic subjects, along with helping them integrate those into occupational skills. "Integrated/contextualized" instruction is the big new kid on the Adult-Education block. Great possibilities. Thanks.

I'm trying to create a word puzzle and/or scavenger hunt using clickable signs but the command is not working.

I found out that there is a clickable sings functionality in the Essentials mod so I'm thinking that this may be the reason the commands are not working. Another thing is that under Essentials they have to be enabled in the files.

Aaron Schwartz could you enable it for me please?

I happened on OliveTree Lighthouse and Michiyo Toshima on the server last night while searching for coal at night in a darkened mine, and ended up at a place where Mattie and others had been building fanciful sand castles near some well looted tombs. I was using my phone as a hot spot and suddenly it ran out of battery, in case people were wondering where I went (no, it wasn't another skeleton :-)

I'm wondering what sort of ratio between language novices (L2 learners) and language "experts" (in a relativistic sense including other L2 learners) would be needed to make in-game L2 learning viable. Does immersion work if you are only immersed with other novices?

Thank you, Kim Harrison for inviting us on the East Coast Miners server.

Thank you, Kim Harrison for inviting us on the East Coast Miners server. Treasure hunting was a lot of fun! The coral reef and tropical fish are so beautiful! I think that kids can learn far more by collaborating and communicating with players in Minecraft than they can by taking online synchronous language lessons (Online language tutoring/learning has been a trend lately). I see a lot of creativity, problem-solving, and peer-teaching with patience in Minecraft. I was taught by Cats, a teenage east coast miner, how to fly. She gave me lots of tips and feedback to my repeated failing attempts, and with her help, I re-learned how to fly in survival mode in Minecraft!

Greetings everyone, welcome to Week 4 in #evomc19.

Greetings everyone, welcome to Week 4 in #evomc19. As typically happens in MOOCs the 4th stage is clustering, where community members find their most like-minded colleagues and settle into projects amongst themselves. This seems to be happening here, as in the Riverbend community pictured below. This is also reflected in our Live Events schedule, where it may appear that things are tapering off, but in fact the worker bees have found the times they like to work together and have been popping onto the server at routine times to continue their builds. This doesn't mean we won't be declaring events. We'll be arranging more shortly.

Meanwhile, let us know if you want a guided tour of what's going on, or help getting started (never too late in EVO Minecraft MOOC). Feel free to join us, and keep an eye on our events page for new on what's coming up, http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/130258521/2019_Live_Events.

Most importantly, if you want to join in, let us hear from you.

Could someone explain how Dak did his "in flight" recording during my extreme survival adventure?

Could someone explain how Dak did his "in flight" recording during my extreme survival adventure? I'd like to capture some of this 3rd person observer perspective video for subsequent analysis.

I still have the three 1st person recordings made by Jane, Mattie, and Emanual (Rose) during last year's EVOMC session, but I've had a hard time getting them precisely sync'ed and the resulting combined file size has been huge. I still think there is something analytically important to be gleaned from 1st person video, but since conversation analysts usually work with 3rd person ("god perspective") video recordings, maybe I should start with that.

Dak's video was great, but because we were such an unruly mob running all over he had to move around a lot. Also there were too many voices and too many different conversations going on a one to be usable for my CA purposes.

Ideal would be to record (from a more or less fixed location slightly above the participants) interaction during a building activity with at most 3 participants.

This is about the best I've been able to do so far.
