Week 4 #evomc16
Week 4 #evomc16
Last week’s unexpected six-day winter vacation completely derailed my schedule and plans for work and study. Who wants to work when there’s a blizzard and homemade chili in the kitchen? Not me. So, I was not as efficient as I could have been, but I did drink a cup of tea for three hours Monday morning, caught up on sleep and thought about homework and reports. Most of which I got done in an exhausting 48-hour marathon on Thursday and Friday.
Saturday was an interesting day; I woke up to read that the White House had announced a $4 billion computer science initiative for K-12 students. Computer literacy is now a basic skill. We’ll see how it plays out.
Later in the morning, I went to Microsoft’s #HacktheClassroom , which I feared would be a two-hour advertisement, but it was not. There was, as usual, a lot of data, but I took away two new things that I want to use in a future classroom: Code.org and OneNote. Code.org has online computer science fundamentals and an “hour of code” with Minecraft https://code.org/mc. I have always ignored OneNote on my computer, but it apparently can be extremely valuable in a classroom (with computers), and I would like to explore how to use it.
This morning, I took a tour of Thorsten Groß and his students’ Minecraft Ricarda-Huch-Schule. Impressive but very intimidating. However, I did learn how to jump, which I did not even know was possible because I always fly. I want to add a basketball court to my ranch before we go into survival mode.
Later, I spent hours in survival mode alone. My first try was ended by a zombie on the first night. Oh well. In my second try, I lasted for five days and five and a half nights and then was killed by a zombie. I could not find coal for fire, only diorite, and the nights were spent huddled in a hollow with a sword. And I didn’t eat at all because there were only rabbits which refused to be food. They just got mad and jumped away.
On the last night, with only half a heart, I knew it was over. A zombie was jumping up and down on the ledge in front of me, and then a second one came at me from the right. All I had was a stone sword, and it didn’t work to my advantage this time. I learned a lot about gathering and crafting, and realized I am at a real disadvantage without a mouse. I am really clumsy right clicking with my touch-pad mouse while crafting, and I need to practice before going into multiplayer survivor.

Vance Stevens - Just checking in to apologise for non-attendance this week - it's been the first few days of preparation before the new academic year and staff development has been a priority for me. Hopefully I can listen to the next couple of recordings, survive in survival mode and complete my Week 4 missions over the next seven days. I hope to make it inworld next Sunday evening instead! #evomc16

The final piece to the archive of the talk entitled Projects and challenges – designing and building, that @BronSt uckey gave to #evomc16, EVO #Minecraft MOOC, one of this year's #EVOsessions, is now posted as #learning2gether episode 312 at

A screencast was originally made of the live session but replaced with a YouTube of the Adobe Connect recording due to its better quality, so an mp3 rendition was made from that. Finally, the text chat replete with links was harvested from the Adobe Connect recording and linked to from that URL. Thanks to Bron for the effort, and I hope you enjoy the result.

Here are some objects for learning or teaching math in minecraft #evomc16 :
See it in my ePortfolio blog: https://gaz-reichelsheim-lernplattform.de/mahara/view/view.php?id=44
The area-land
(picture below)
The learningcontext
A square with width and length of 1 meter has the area of 1m² (Square meter, in german 1 Quadratmeter).width and length of 1
The next area has a width and length of 2 meter. But how about the area. Looking at the object you can see something special.
(now you should first look at he objects in the minecraft-world)
"Answer"
Although the width and length is doubled the area is not 2m²! The area is 4m².
Same with the next square. The width and length is 3m and the area is not 3m²! The area is 9m².
What is the ares of a square with 5m width and length?
Build it in minecraft and count. Or if you can, than you just calculate it :-)
The volume-land
(picture below)
The learningcontext
A block with width and length of 1 meter has the volume of 1m³ (1 cubic meter).
Walk through the minecraft-world and examine the volume of the other blocks.
(now you should first look at he objects in the minecraft-world)
"Answer"
Although the width and length is doubled the volume is not 2m³! The area is 8m³.

Hi all, I've had some catch-up work to get through in my real world and have just started getting my mind round virtual world meet-ups this weekend. It looks as if two productive times might be Sat at 1400 UTC and Sunday at noon UTC.
If you can make either of those times, or if you would like to register other times, please fill in our current Doodle poll at
http://doodle.com/poll/gkk2bnaui7dswhgs
I and my fellow moderators will be watching the poll to see who else wants to meet in-world. If you have filled out our form and been white-listed you can visit our server any time you wish (and if you haven't done that yet, please submit your form at the enrollment link in the right sidebar.)
Look in the G+C sidebar on the right for links to the latest Doodle Polls. I'm deleting the out-of-date ones and archiving them here

A group of players have recreated pirate-age Havana Cuba within Minecraft. What's interesting (beside recreating Havana!) is these players used the game Assassin's Creed Black Flag to provide the model for Havana. The game is set in the golden age of pirates in the Caribbean.
Black Flag is the fifth installation of the game franchise 'Assassin's Creed' with each game taking place in a unique city and period of history. Other games have been set in ancient Constantinople, Revolutionary War Boston, and Paris during the French Revolution. Ubisoft prides itself on accuracy. For example in the game set in Paris, one artistic director spent two years modeling Notre Dame, working with historians to ensure that even the paintings on the cathedral's walls in game were historically accurate. In Assassin's Creed III the window frames in Boston's King's Chapel are accurately recreated in the game.
Not content to play Assassin's Creed and leave it at that, these Minecraft players used in game maps and images to faithfully recreate the Havana seen in Black Flag. I'd be curious to see how much (if any) historical information these players learned in re-building the map in Minecraft.
Give it a look:

Third Week #evomc16
Third Week #evomc16
This weekend’s blizzard was fortuitous because I am feeling overwhelmed by Minecraft. There is so much to know, and I am still figuring out basics in Creative, such as coordinates, torches and sea lanterns. I am in awe my fellow MOOCers’creativity; they are building castles, libraries, tree houses and zombie pits. I flew home and tried to build a greenhouse with fountains and tropical fruits, fell out of the world after I fell into the water and had to respawn. So my greenhouse is now a memorial to the first me.
We are going into Survival mode next week, and I have to practice how to build shelter and fend off mobs. Learning Minecraft is more difficult than I thought it would be, and I would be completely lost without experts to help me with the basics. The YouTube videos are invaluable, but Minecraft can be disorienting, and it’s wonderful to have someone there to answer questions or help with emergencies.
To use Minecraft in a classroom, students would have to spend several hours learning the basics, and then work in small groups with at least one expert to work and accomplish tasks. Our meeting with Bron Stuckey today was a fascinating introduction to project-based learning with Minecraft, and I hope to use some of the examples and ideas from the meeting in the near future.

Going to TESOL in Baltimore?
Hi all, with all the cool stuff we have heard from everyone regarding their Minecraft experience before the MOOC I'm wondering if anyone would like to be on a panel? I have already got Vance on board :)
It's a games panel and I'd like to do a moderated Q&A on tips, tricks, suggestions, and lessons learned on using games in the classroom. So if are going to TESOL and would like to share your knowledge let me know.

Hi again. I have embedded this tutorial video in our Missions wiki here
Hi again. I have embedded this tutorial video in our Missions wiki here
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/103905435/2016_Week1_Orient#Mission2InstallandenterBbCollaborate
The tutorial explains how you can brute force a PC into cooperating with the .collab files that you download to launch a session in Bb Collaborate or to launch a native playback (recording) file.
I noted at the above link that almost 40% of the 30 some-odd who have filled out our form said that they had not been able to launch Bb Collaborate but were still trying (see the image here; and the figure now is closer to 40%)
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/f/1453115939/2016-01-18_1517BbCfails.png
But I realized when my son was filling in the form a few days ago that when he came to that question he passed over it by choosing "no, but still trying". It's plausible that a majority of the 40% of our respondents simply took the natural human nature short cut of not trying to launch BbC when filling out the form, but were planning to try later. In other words it seems possible that the program will work for most of us, but many may not have tried.
About 3% said, no they couldn't launch the program and they gave up. These data discouraged us moderators from going with our plan to use BbC as our VoIP tool for this session.
For the 3% and perhaps others in the 40% category, there is a solution to the problem that works for me every time on a PC. It appears complicated but it's easier than creating a spell in Minecraft. So think of this tutorial as showing you a way to cast a spell over your PC that will force it to launch BbC so you can talk to other uses when playing Minecraft (without having to manage a Skype voice chat, which is the only other option available as of this moment that will accommodate more than 10 users on the call).
When I go to the server at 1300 today I will go to BbC at this URL
http://webheads.learningtimesevents.org/
If you want to join me in either or both places that would be wonderful :-) If I see you in MC you can tell me in text if you are having a problem reaching BbC and in that case we'll start a Skype voice call.
Hope to see you there about an hour and a half from now

Hi all, tomorrow I will be pinning a post for Week 3 but for now, I'd like to suggest a meeting in-world today. From our Doodle poll (see the link for Jan 18-24 in the right sidebar) I see that Kathleen Kearney , Mircea Patrascu , Rose Bard , Ellen Clegg , and Beth S O'Connell have indicated they'd like to join us in Minecraft today. I plan to be there at the times convenient to me, from around 1300 UTC (London). If anyone else would like to join us, please do. If I'm not there, you'll learn a lot from Rose and Mircea (IT specialist in Minecraft) and from anyone else you find there.
Skype is a good way to do voice hookups for small crowds. I'll be posting a tutorial for forcing Bb Collaborate to work shortly as well.
Maybe see you there :-)

Hello!
Hello!
I have not been whitelisted on the server yet. I do have some experience with Minecraft, but would still appreciate the opportunity to join you this weekend.

In the coming month's keep your eye on release of the game No Man's Sky.
In the coming month's keep your eye on release of the game No Man's Sky. It will use an algorithm similar to that of Minecraft to procedural generate not just a world but a galaxy. The game will be able to produce quadrillions of planets and players will be able to travel from one to the next. You find it first you name it. It'll be a server based game so everyone will play in the same galaxy.
I take every games news prior to the games release with a grain of salt but this sort of scale and ambition is an indicator of where games can go.

Hi, All - I'm dying to join the group in world, but haven't been whitelisted yet. I've submitted 2 forms--one with what I incorrectly thought was my username (my e-mail) and one with my real username (Weftwaif). is there anything else I need to supply?
Ok.
Ok. I watched and took notes on the first two tutorials. However, although I can now find trees, when I punch them by left clicking on the mouse for my Macbook Pro nothing happens. I would like to use the Doodle thing to meet someone who knows how to punch a tree, but haven't signed up becaue I do not know how to post and respond to texts in MC. : )
The server is looking fantastic!
The server is looking fantastic! There is always a bit of critical mass with MC and helping new users understand what the game can be. Last week our server was largely empty and it was hard to get the creative juices flowing for me. But now there are so many cool things built by our community. When I should have been working today, I was off wandering around the server seeing what everyone has constructed. Now the server feels like a community project and shows what Minecraft can be.

Got a big problem!
Got a big problem! I bought and installed Minecraft, but it does not seem to work on my PC. It crashes when I try to access the world. Could anyone help me?
Hi everyone
Hi everyone,
Week 2 Jan 17-23 is dedicated to the DECLARE phase of coping in MOOCs.
After the initial ORIENT week we have 31 people so far who have filled out our Google form at
http://tinyurl.com/evomc16-enroll. From that around 25 Minecraft user names have been whitelisted on our server.
You are welcome to join us at any time but please fill in the information we need to whitelist you in our form.
Several of us have met in-world already using a variety of VoIP tools so we can talk live with one another while exploring the game.
Our proposed VoIP tool Bb Collaborate is not working out for 40% of those who filled in the form so we must find another. I will create a Skype Group for #EVOMC16 using the Skype names provided when you filled in the form. This will serve two functions: (1) to give us a group text chat for better communications, and (2) to possibly use it for voice calls while we are in MC. Other moderators have other suggestions and we'll let you know when we find the best one, or you can suggest one in a comment here.
If you did not provide your MC user name or Skype name on the form and want to rectify that, try to edit the form. But if you can't do that, just visit again and fill it out again and submit. We can eliminate duplicate records later but we need your MC user name to whitelist you so you can join us in world.
Last night several of us went to our server after Jeff's talk and played around. It's in creative mode at the moment, so it's safe. If you are with us on this session you need to get there as soon as possible and practice before Jeff and Aaron put us in survival mode (yikes!)
We have created a Doodle for Week 2 here
http://doodle.com/poll/9bws7d7xvbzg96h5
Please register your times available to join us in Minecraft and we will try to meet you there.
I have added a category in the left sidebar for "Arrange meetings in Minecraft" so if you want to post in this community to that category perhaps this will help facilitate people managing to meet up in world.
Recordings are forthcoming for our two keynote talks so far, mine on Jan 12 and Jeff's on the 17th. Jeff's should be posted by tomorrow. We'll update you.
I have updated the missions list at
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/ to remove the one about joining Bb Collaborate (no longer required) and to postpone my promise to have a Google sheet set up for missions tracking. I'll get to that asap, and thanks to those who have been looking for it and helping to get me in gear.
You can find your missions through the syllabus document whose link is in the right-hand sidebar at this community as shown in the screenshot here: http://screencast.com/t/ehm2DnRuKY
I hope we're responding to your questions. If you have any suggestions, doubts, concerns, or anything of interest to share please post here.

Second Week #evomc16
Second Week #evomc16
Today was the first day of the second week. I attended an online forum about the possibilities for using Minecraft in education. One of the points made in the presentation is that students are working at home with sophisticated Internet technology to create and build, and, in comparison, school textbooks, worksheets, group work and classroom videos are dull. I think about the second-grade ELL who told me all he knew about volcanos, lava and obsidian but would not write about his personal scientific interests. My reaction at the time was all about BICS and CALP, but after this morning's presentation I wonder if he was just bored and wanted to go home to Minecraft. I hope that this MOOC will help me to better comprehend such moments and find a way to connect Minecraft with paper and pencil work.
I think I am spending too much time trying to figure out the basics and that I am doing something wrong. My understanding was that in creative mode you can build anything your imagination conjures, but I can only punch holes and chop down trees. If I go for a walk, I collect things I don't even want, like rotten flesh, apples and oak saplings. They just show up in my inventory. I tried to give a horse the apple, and I think I killed it. I can't figure out how build. And I get really anxious in the MOOC server because all I can do is fly and punch holes.
Actually, I can do more than fly and punch holes; I can walk forward, backward, left and right. I can change perspective so that I am looking at my person from the front or back. Today, he got caught in a hailstorm and looked miserable. I was truly upset that I could not build him shelter. I didn't even think of flying back to the MOOC-built structures. So this week is figuring out how to build in my solitary creative world and then transferring those skills to the MOOC.

I was there briefly last night and was impressed by the castle and what looked like a lava fountain a short distance away. I think I may have carved a whole in the ground outside the castle when I logged out. If it is still there, I'll try to fix it today.
I waited until Saturday to try to play and then ran into problems finding the server.
I waited until Saturday to try to play and then ran into problems finding the server. People helped with that, so today I could enter, but can't do anything. I'm looking for trees to punch and don't see any. I googled for images and found plenty, but nothing on my screen for the game looks like though images, so I'm stuck. The looking around reminds me a lot of Second Life and the cardboard virtual reality glass I just purchased. However, for purposes of the game I would like to move closer to some of the buildings I see, but have no idea how to do it.
I just got into the server for the first time but couldn't figure out how to do anything!
I just got into the server for the first time but couldn't figure out how to do anything! I heard nice, gentle music and could see objects and animals moving around and making some kind of crunching noise as they hopped around, but I couldn't see how to interact or do anything. Guess I need to watch some videos. I thought I'd be able to choose the mode or whatever it's called--creative, survival, etc. But maybe this is when I'm playing alone not on server.
It started to get dark, and I recall that's a dangerous time, so I quit, chicken that I am...

Hi everyone, and thanks to Aaron for setting up the server.
Hi everyone, and thanks to Aaron for setting up the server. There is one catch, to get on it you must be white-listed. To be white-listed you must provide us your Minecraft user name. We have white-listed everyone who filled out our form (Enrollment link in the sidebar). If you have not provided a user name please edit your form OR fill in a new entry giving your MC user name and I'll delete the previous entry. We will only white-list members of this Google+ Community.
If you're white-listed you can visit the server any time, but the next step is to find times when others can meet you there. I have created a Doodle poll for that for Friday, Sat, and Sunday. For Monday onwards we'll create another poll.
For the time frame mentioned, fill out the poll at

I Heard and read a bit about minecraft and have seen some amazing worlds developed by Aaron Schwartz, Jeff Kuhn, and my two nephews. I myself have only managed to build a cave in survival mode and survive the night. Now, I am excited to finally build on that knowledge.

Minecraft is not a game...it's a toy :)
Minecraft is not a game...it's a toy :)
It has been great seeing the EVO flourish this week and I'm excited for everyone to join the Minecraft server and start building. We may be the only EVO that gets to play with a toy! I got to thinking about this idea while on the server earlier today so I thought I'd post.
Minecraft isn't a game. It is digital software and in common parlance we call it a game or videogame but it's not. Game is a tricky word to define. After all it is a word that covers Chess and hide-and-go-seek. However most game designers and academics agree that games have four defining traits: voluntary participation, rules, a feedback system, and a goal. Past these characteristics it is challenging to define the word game.
Minecraft has none of these defining characteristics. In a theoretical way it has more in common with a rubber ball than Super Mario Bros. Toys, like Minecraft or a rubber ball, have no rules, goals, and a rudimentary feedback system if one at all. Wil Wright, who made The Sims and SimCity (also a toy!) defines something as a toy when the user determines the use and limitations of the object.
Minecraft captures Wil's idea beautifully. I think it is what makes it so captivating. Not only in-game with what we can build but outside the game via mods we can alter Minecraft in profound ways. In that toy sense what we can do as players and teachers is up to us.
So for those new to Minecraft don't be shy, you can't break our toy and who ever heard of making a mistake with a toy? It can't be done.
It's going to be fun!

Hey, all! My name is Beth. I teach ELLs (mostly refugees) in Vermont, USA. I've heard a lot about Minecraft and am hoping to figure out why it's got so many people talking.
Hi, I am Thorsten Groß from the Ricarda-Huch-Schule in Dreieich.
Hi, I am Thorsten Groß from the Ricarda-Huch-Schule in Dreieich. We are using Minecraft in Working Communities. Up to 2015 we used an Edu-Version of Minecraft. At the moment we try to test Minetest under Linux.
During a BarCamp about Games the idea of reconstructing our hole school was planned and lateron finished by students themselves (using Mahara as an orga-plattform).
At the moment we're planning another event about Minecraft in our school. The goal is to construct a bigger thing (Death Star?) together in cooperation and document the learning of the students. A possible timeslot is at the end of may 2016, but the date is not yet fixed.

Hi, effusive welcome to all, and here is what you should be doing this week.
First, if you are using the NEW version of Google+ Communities please revert to the OLD version. We designed on the old version and our sidebar might not appear in the new version. Google made many poorly conceived changes to the new version.
In the right sidebar, open the Syllabus (here is the link)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x2EMf1QxfU1lrQxkpbEQLAR0Yl8d7a8diD8R9E9DAWc/edit?usp=sharing
This gives you the overview of #evomc16 and points you to where you find your weekly missions and earn badges. Find what you need to do to accomplish the 6 week 1 missions here: http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/103905435/2016_Week1_Orient
Be sure and fill out the form
http://goo.gl/forms/zALHMWsPGX.
This will allow us to white-list you on our Minecraft server.
We are on the verge of announcing the IP address of our server. Shortly after we will use Doodle to organize times when you can see who is available to meet there at times convenient to you.
We have synchronous meetings as well. These are listed at the links above and also as Events set for this community. The next one will feature Jeff Kuhn on Sun Jan 17, time to be announced; followed by Bronwyn Stuckey Jan 24 . All these meetings are recorded.
Our first Event was Jan 12. The YouTube recording is not yet available but the slides are available here

If you need help post to the category Questions Needing Attention at this Google+ Community.
Welcome all and I look forward to learning more about gamification in learning and professional development from all of you in the course of this session.

I'm a middle school librarian on the East Coast of the US. I have an after-school Games Club which is mostly playing Minecraft. We have a MinecraftEdu server that I run in school on my laptop during club meetings. I also taught a week-long course for our students on Media Literacy in Minecraft, using Knowclue Kidd's ideas. I love playing Minecraft myself, and play on one server with adult friends and another server with teens, run by teachers.

I have a name, and I am lurking in Minecraft. So far, I am alone, in the creative mode, with two worlds. In the first world, I dug myself into a cave, and I cannot figure out how to get out. There is a tiny light in the ceiling where I must have gotten in. This world is on hold until I learn more about the game. In my second world, I am in a flat green terrain, with no trees in sight, but there are a lot of hopping green rectangles. The whole thing freaked me out, and I logged out. I'll return later when I have more time to mess around.
The articles we read this week were fascinating. I enjoyed reading about Filip Smolcec learned English through the game and YouTube. I am obsessed by a paragraph in Jeff Kuhn's article on Minecraft Meaningful Play – Making Professional Development Fun:
"Video games have become a staple of popular culture for a large segment of the population but for kids in particular they are becoming the preferred source of entertainment. With this new entertainment comes new literacy skills as well. Kids will assume those around them have a knowledge about games and how they function in the same way older generations assume a literacy regarding books, movies and music. In the near future claiming you do not understand games will evoke a response similar to claiming you ‘don’t get music’."
This has happened several times when my ELL students opened up to me in enthusiastic, detailed English about Minecraft, and I didn't understand what they were saying.

Hello.
Hello. I'm an ESL teacher based in northern Spain. I run a small language academy and have tried to use Minecraft in the classroom before. Some of the older kids give me lessons about the game! lol!
I'm no expert at playing. I have no idea about using redstone, for example.
I think it's about time I learnt more about using it effectively. It certainly gets my students motivated.
I also introduced my eight year old son to Minecraft too over a year ago. His imagination goes wild when he plays, I love it!
Happy to join you and learn from you.

Hi
Hi,
I'm Tilly Harrison back again this year to pick up where I left off... which was about Week 3 ;) I am also looking for ways to gamify learning but I'm not sure I would be using Minecraft per se in my situation. However I want to experience it myself in collaboration with other newbies so that I at least know about it!! I teach at the university of Warwick on the MA ELT with a specialism in ICT.

Hi everyone,
My name is Aaron Schwartz and I will be one of the moderators for this session along with Teacher Rose Bard, Vance Stevens, and Jeff Kuhn.
While my experience designing lessons based around Minecraft is limited, I do have significant experience with course/curriculum develpment and I'm a good resource for questions about the game of Minecraft itself, as well as general technology questions...particularly on the Mac/Linux side of things.
I look forward to seeing/meeting you all in-game.

As Vance Stevens has mentioned before, filling the registration form is very important because it will allow us to get your user name and white-list you in Minecraft in-world server. For that, you will need a Minecraft username first. Take a look at the missions for this week and the live event happening tomorrow.
We look forward to meeting you in MC world. :)

Hi everyone.
Hi everyone. I retired from teaching ESL some year ago and since then have been teaching an online course about technology for language learning. I have been hearing about Minecraft for teaching for a while and am interested in why it seems so popular. Besides that my 7-year old grandchildren play it!

I have a minecraft-server for school but only for the freetime of the pupils. We want to create something very cool, but did not start yet. I already learned a lot how to protect a server, buiild groups, protect areas on a server and how to allow or prohibit something.
I know Andreas Schenkel well and may be we can so something together for math.
My now 10 years old son brought me to minecraft some years ago and now we create together buildings on our family-server.

Hi everyone, I'm Vance Stevens, founder of Webheads in Action and coordinator of http://learning2gether.net, and one of the coordinators for EVO for the past 15 years. I'm the lead coordinator for #evomc16 though we couldn't do it without help from Aaron Schwartz and Jeff Kuhn who've set up our Minecraft server in Ohio and all the other great moderators here who are about to help you learn all you are able to absorb about Minecraft.
I'm an EFL teacher in Al Ain UAE which means it's bed time for me so I leave you to orient on our course while the server team organizes how to get you on our server so we can start learning Minecraft together.
Please examine our syllabus document here http://tinyurl.com/evomc16-syllabus, learn about how to accomplish your missions that will earn you your Minecraft Survivor's Badge http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/, and most importantly, fill out the form that enrolls you in the course and gets you white-listed to play with us on our server, here http://goo.gl/forms/zALHMWsPGX.
Our first live event is at 15:15 UTC Jan 12, http://tinyurl.com/learning2gether. First 2-3 weeks in Minecraft are in creative mode, so newbies, learn all you can asap. Week 4 we'll start survival mode, but don't worry we'll learn how to collaborate in world to get you through it.
Make sure you obtain your Minecraft login (about $30, nothing we can do about that, sorry) and let's learn about gamification in language learning using one of the most engaging games for nurturing creative thinking on the planet.

Since I was totally lost when I played a bit with Minecraft after downloading and installing the software, I searched YouTube for help and found this tutorial for beginners: https://youtu.be/UcRY6nDIp-E
Hope this isn't "cheating." The video creator, William Brockett, mentions another useful resource, Minecraft Wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki
I don't feel quite as lost now, though I still know next to nothing!

Hi everyone - I am an ELL teacher at an elementary school in Washington, DC. This is my first year teaching ESL to children, and I am also working on a masters in literacy and language education. Quite a few of the ELLs I work with have trouble following along in class and completing assignments, but they are on task and thrilled to talk about Minecraft, about which I know almost nothing. I am really looking forward to this class.

Hi everyone, I'm an educator in Western Australia and have been using Minecraft in an after school club with around 17 primary aged students. I'm looking for ways to further involve teachers in allowing students to engage with Minecraft as a way of developing project based learning. I have attended many 3DGameLab teacher camps and thoroughly enjoy the learning I take from each experience.

Hi, Everyone!
Hi, Everyone!
I’m a mostly retired former California (USA) community college ESL teacher (30+ yrs), now occasional English teacher educator, winding up nearly 2 1/2 years living near extended family in the Philippines. I used computers and online resources for most of my language teaching career and most recently for language teacher education. Served on the CALL-IS steering committee way back in the 1990s and helped found its California equivalent. Just finished serving as a Community TA for several iterations of the Coursera MOOCs, Shaping the Way We Teach English.
I’ve gotten to know Vance Stevens better in the last couple of years, and his passion for Minecraft has finally made me curious enough to try it. I’m eager to learn first-hand how “gamification,” and specifically playing Minecraft can facilitate language acquisition.
At this point in my professional life game playing is really appealing! That said, I may not be able to spend as much time playing and learning as I’d like, since my wife and I are also preparing to move back to the U.S. just a week after the end of this EVO session.
Looking forward to an engaging, challenging and enjoyable collaborative learning experience.

As for MOOCs, my first was EduMooc in 2011 and since then I've been attending many C and X Moocs.
I look forward to learning from and with you.

In 2012 One of the courses that I attended through Secondlife (Teaching and Learning in Virtual Worlds) introduced me to World of Warcraft and I still play on both sides of the battle :)
As for MOOCs, my first was EduMooc in 2011 and since then I've been attending many C and X Moocs.
I look forward to learning from and with you.

Hi everyone
Hi everyone,
I'm Nina Liakos, and I will be participating in this session both as a Minecraft newbie and as the session mentor (representative from the EVO Coordination Team).
I've retired from teaching after 43 years. I've been involved in the EVO in one capacity or another for the past 10 years.
I'm looking forward to learning how to "play", although I won't be using the game in a classroom setting.

Hi all
Hi all,
A new year so a new introduction! Thanks for joining our Minecraft #evomc16 community. I'm Jeff and this is my second year on the team. I'm a writing teacher at Ohio University where I am also lucky to teach Computer Assisted Language Learning in our MA Linguistics program. On the side I'm working on my PhD dissertation. My research focus is on collaborative problem solving and distributed cognition in games.
I'm here to help with any Minecraft question so if you have any trouble let me know.
Let's play!

Our tagboard at https://tagboard.com/evomc16/search isn't picking up FB and we have found so far that we need to post here or on Twitter and tag that post #evomc16 in order for it to register on our Tagboard. Because it has relevance to our session coming up, I am re-posting Teacher Rose Bard 's FB post here. It's a good example of the spontaneous learning we can all enjoy by participating in this session. To enroll and join us, click on the link at the end of Rose's post, this one:
